One should never say never, so maybe I’ll get back into translating one day. But - yeah, not any time soon.

Thanks for everyone who commented on the translations, it’s because of you guys that this project was so much fun and definitely worth the time and effort!

Wishing you well <3

Kanjani8 - How many points did you get?

Nishikido Ryo

I earned 0 points for this in 2008
Going to the gym. I went regularly in January maybe. During “Last Friends” I also went frequently. But about now I don’t go at all. I don’t feel like going, but more importantly I always rather want to sleep. *laughs* And so, in the end I lost the muscles I’d gained through training again… I’ve absolutely earned 0 points.

I earned 50 points for this in 2008
My physical condition, I guess. It hasn’t improved, but it also hasn’t worsened. I didn’t get seriously sick or hurt either. When I feel that I’m getting a cold, I instantly go to the hospital to get an injection. Just by getting the injection I feel that I’m already healed. Nonetheless, I don’t take any precautions. Though I do think it would have been better to do so once I got a cold, I usually don’t pay attention to my health at all. Naming one thing that I do take note of, that would be eating a lot. But I always pray “Please let me stay healthy”. *laughs*

I earned 80 points for this in 2008
The amount of work. There was “Isshun no kaze ni natte”, “Last Friends”, “Ryûsei no kizuna”… I appeared in three dorama in the course of one year. But actually I want to appear in even more. To the point that I’m appearing in dorama all year round.
… wait a moment. That’s not really 80 points, is it. What’s 80 points to me might be 0 points for people who are very busy. It’s difficult. Well, then maybe 30 points for the amount of work. I can work for 70 points more! Okay, so something with 80 points, right? Things I got 80 points for… huh? I guess there aren’t any. *laughs*

I earned 100 points for this in 2008
There is a lot. Well, that’s a lie. *laughs* The one thing I can give myself 100 points for is that I didn’t change my hair color for the whole year. Last year I dyed it blonde for a short time, but this year it’s been black all the time. As a Japanese, I get 100 points for that, right. I also didn’t feel like dyeing it at all. That’s about the only thing I got 100 points for. *laughs*
It won’t do to give out 100 points that easily. I mean, if you add up all of me in 2008, you get 5 points. For the other 95 points I still have to work hard. It’s not about working hard on anything specific. I have to work hard on the whole. Consistently. Well, I do think that consistent people don’t really exist, though. Still, I need to consistently work hard in everything I do. And now you surely ask me what I worked hard at to gain 5 points, right? *laughs* I just said that because I didn’t want to say 0. *laughs* Because if I did that, 2008 would become a year I wasted.

Kanjani8 - This time we focused on the topic of “requirement” and asked about “requirements for a man” or “requirements for Kanjani8″.

Nishikido Ryo
Requirements for a man
That’s short hair after all. And a big nose. These two points are very important for a manly look. That’s what I think. As for me, I still don’t fulfill these two requirements. Ah, also, not carrying a handbag. I basically don’t carry a bag when I go out. When I stay somewhere for three days, I can go out empty-handed. The last time I went overseas I also went empty-handed. I just had my friend store my passport and a pair of underpants in his bag. That’s something only a man can do, right?

Requirements for Kanjani8
Holding yourself well. This means no matter where. If it’s a serious scene, even if you’re tired out, even if you don’t want to, you have to make jokes. *laughs* That’s why it’s fun no matter how tired I am. Speaking of that, yesterday I got a video mail from Maru-chan, and he was joking around so much in it. He made stupid faces and gestures, and I didn’t get it at all. *laughs* But as I get into a really good mood just by looking at these mails, I thanked him in reply.

Requirements for a Kansai man
Um, hating natto.[1] Me? I love natto. *laughs* I hate people who say that they hate natto. I feel like, “What’s up with them!?”, so I think it’s the people from Tokyo only who think that Kansai people can’t eat natto. When we talked about this topic, Yokoyama-kun sat next to me and commented, “I can’t eat natto…” *laughs* I felt like, ah, sorry. I hate that people have this kind of image of me. Kansai people eat takoyaki [2] each day, or, they eat rice and okonomiyaki [3]. Makes you want to say “As if!”, doesn’t it. In other words, being annoyed with this is another requirement for people from Kansai. *laughs*

Requirements for Nishikido Ryo
As long as there is karaage [4], rice, miso soup, fried ginger and fried noodles, I can survive! Ah, and ramen. I don’t need any other food than these. I’m confident that I could live on only these. Then there’s my guitar. I don’t really read books… ah! I did read one the other day. It was a mystery novel and it was so interesting that I read it in one go in six hours. I always read novels in one go and it usually takes me two days to finish them. That’s also one of my requirements.

Requirements for an idol
Long hair. Thin. Smile. White teeth. That’s all! *laughs* How I apply these to myself… I don’t really. I’m absolutely not aware of them. If I should name the one person inside Kanjani8 who is most idol-like? They all are, but if I have to name one, it’d be Murakami-kun. That beard is great, isn’t it? *laughs*

Notes:
[1] natto: fermented soybeans, smell atrociously and are slimy
[2] takoyaki: small balls of dough with pieces of octopus meat fried in special forms
[3] okonomiyaki: a sort of pancake that is made with a variety of different ingredients like fish, meat, vegetables, and covered with a special sauce, mayonnaise and small pieces of fried seaweed
[4] karaage: means just deep-fried, without specifying what exactly is fried

NEWS - Relaxing moment
With the year end concerts at Tokyo Dome and the January concerts at the Kyocera Dome, NEWS finished their tour as a big success. This month we bring you talks between three of the members from their dressing room at the Kyocera Dome on the last day of their tour!! And we wanted to give the guys who’ve worked so hard between the years a moment of pure bliss… and so we had them relax.

Nishikido Ryo x Katô Shigeaki x Tegoshi Yûya

Masuda Takahisa - At the moment, Massu leads the life of a rescue firefighter in the dorama “Rescue”, were there times during the tour that he rescued you?

Ryo: He didn’t rescue me at least. I also didn’t rescue him.
Tegoshi: Massu is amazing at remembering dance moves, I often used to rely on him for making sure I got the choreography right.
Ryo: Ah, that’s true. I’ve pretty much forgotten the choreography from the last tour or the one before that.
Shige: The one who’s been rescued the most by him is without a doubt Koyama. *laughs*
Tegoshi: I also witnessed Massu in trouble. This time during the song “Why” there’s this scene where Massu has to do a break shot (the first shot).
Shige: Yes, yes, Massu and I do this scene together, it’s like Massu does the break shot and then I start singing. Massu messed up so many times in this scene. *laughs* His queue slips and the balls just roll weakly. And to that I start singing “♪Why～”. I really ask myself, why? *laughs*
Ryo: Also, Massu never takes a shower before a concert. All the other members are sure to go into the showers before the show, but I’ve never seen Massu go.
Tegoshi: That’s true. Before the show, Massu always aimlessly walks around through the dressing rooms or near the catering, talking with the staff.
Shige: But you know, he has a proper reason for that. At the place we stay for the night, he gets up earlier than anyone else and definitely takes a shower at the hotel. It’s rather that the other members aren’t doing it properly. *laughs*

Yamashita Tomohisa - Yamapi, a free spirit and popular, can you tell us what kind of free spirit he showed during the tour this time?

Shige: This just happened several minutes ago, he’d left his mobile phone in camera mode and went somewhere. It’s the same pattern as in what I talked about in the last issue of Wink Up, where he went, “If I use the mayonnaise, I don’t put the cap back on.” In short, he hasn’t changed at all in this regard. *laughs* Even though he just loses battery power and nothing comes out of it for anyone. *laughs*
Tegoshi: And then Yamashita-kun jokes, “Please play around with the camera in this phone freely”. *laughs* Or at least, that’s how I take it.
Shige: We interpreted it that way, took useless pictures of Tegoshi and stealthily saved them on his phone. *laughs*
Ryo: Eh, I think Pi already noticed?
Shige: No, he hasn’t yet.
Tegoshi: I often do stuff like this. You know how the staff from the magazine photoshoots leave their recorder lying around? I do things like singing enthusiastically into it… and a medley of several songs on top of that. *laughs*
Shige: If you do that, they’ll definitely think of you as a bother. You’re such a nuisance. Also, another time when Yamashita-kun displays his freedom is during the MCs, right? When I’m in the middle of talking, he suddenly interrupts with a completely different topic. *laughs*
Ryo: I’ve often witnessed that spectacle. Basically it always happens when Shige is speaking. *laughs* All of a sudden he justs bursts into the talk.
Tegoshi: He does, he does! He also did it during our Tokyo Dome concert. Shige is getting close to the punch line of his talking and around two or three seconds before that punch line, Yamashita-kun suddenly cuts in… that kind of scene. *laughs*
Ryo: The situation at that moment feels like, Shige has been painstakingly putting one domino piece behind the other, and just when there are only a few left until the row is perfect, Pi plunges in the middle of it. *laughs*
Shige: Ahaha. I think my stories just don’t reach Yamashita-kun’s ear… no, they don’t reach his heart. I still haven’t trained enough. *laughs*
Ryo: Pi has this part of him that’s a bit strange. During rehearsals for a concert, when you look down at his feet, he’s wearing slippers. *laughs*
Tegoshi: I’m also pretty free, but I don’t think I can compete with Yamashita-kun’s free spirit. *laughs*
Ryo: In short, in this world Pi’s the strongest guy around.

Koyama Keiichirô - in the stageplay “Call” Koyama plays a man who is hunted down. During the tour, did you witness him being in a fix?

Shige: On stage, Koyama doesn’t really get into desperate situations, does he?
Ryo: Yeah. He isn’t flustered that much.
Shige: Ah, it doesn’t show in his face, but there are times when he’s clearly thinking, “This is the limit!” There’s this greeting at the beginning of the concert he does, right. He changes it everytime but on days when he doesn’t have anything to tell, he just calls out everyone’s names, “Say Ryo-chan!” for example, all except for mine… he has this kind of pattern. It’s like he wants to make everyone laugh by doing this, and on those days I always think, “Ah, now he’s in a bind.” *laughs*
Tegoshi: Yes, it’s true that this kind of pattern resurfaces sometimes. By the way, yesterday during the first concert in Kyocera Dome he called, “Say Shi~ge!”, and after repeating that three times for some reason, he had them all screaming by saying, “And with this power, send your vocal support to Shige!” I don’t get the meaning of that. *laughs* Without a doubt Kei-chan didn’t know what to do. *laughs*
Shige: He suddenly doesn’t know what to say anymore… he’s in a fix, right. *laughs*
Ryo: With Yamapi barging into your MC as we said before, Shige, you’re a poor kid, aren’t you. *laughs*
Shige: I’m really such a poor kid, but… I’m trying to think of it like, he’s in a bind at that time, nothing we can change about that. *laughs*
Ryo: Doesn’t he have this pattern for the MCs, too? Like, if he’s stuck, he turns to Shige.
Shige: He does, he does. If he can keep his place by making fun of me, then I don’t mind. *laughs*
[Note: Not sure about the previous sentence, here's the Japanese: オレいじりで場がもつなら、それでもかまわない]
Ryo: Also, doesn’t Koyama suddenly go, “And how about Tegoshi-san?” (in polite Japanese)
Tegoshi: He does say that! And the intonation of his “Tegoshi-san” is always a bit higher, too. *laughs*
Ryo: That’s such a silly thing to do. *laughs* But he hasn’t turned to me with such enthusiasm, so I feel relieved. *laughs*
Shige: I envy you that position.

Thinking back on this tour

Tegoshi: It’ll properly be over only tomorrow, but… it was fun! If everyone who came was 100% satisfied… I don’t know about that, but at least I think that I gave all that I could right now. And didn’t we go to various places to eat? That was also fun.
Shige: We also did a Christmas party…
Tegoshi: And then there was this! The staff threw a joined birthday party for Nishikido-kun and me.
Ryo: Ah~, yes! That was a surprise. At first, I was so annoyed, thinking, why couldn’t they have waited for Tegoshi and me? *laughs* I was grumbling the whole time. *laughs*
Tegoshi: I also grumbled quite a bit. *laughs* And then when the door opened, everyone was there and set off the crackers. We got message cards from everyone.
Shige: Nishikido-kun, you looked like you were really embarrassed. But it is a situation that makes one feel embarrassed. If it had been me, I’d probably also feel shy, I think.
Ryo: I was so happy. In my heart I thought, I’m so sorry for badmouthing you guys before. *laughs*
Tegoshi: Then, there was the Countdown concert which used NEWS’ stage.
Shige: I thought it’d have a much deeper impact on me, but it was rather that I was already used to the stage, so I didn’t feel strange at all. *laughs* Before the showtime went on air, when Arashi came out of the set formed like a diamond, I thought, “Ah, so that’s what it looks like.”
Tegoshi: After the Countdown was over, Nishikido-kun went to see FiVe’s live concert, right?
Ryo: I did! I really stayed up until morning. They got everyone hyped up, it was a lot of fun. This is about our tour again, but we made a lot of memories during this tour, on stage of course, but also during the off times like now, didn’t we?
Shige: That’s true. This time we took part in everything from the planning of the structure, so it became a concert which contains a lot of our thoughts.
Tegoshi: Yeah, that’s really true. Before it ends, I’m already looking forward to the next concert. *laughs*

[Note: Since the second topic of the talk between Pi, Koyama and Massu is Ryo, I translated that part as well, but this is not the full talk (obviously, looking at the length :)).]

Nishikido Ryo - Ryo-chan has a reputation for being bad-tempered first but then gentle. Rather than about his bad temper, lease tell us about his gentle part that one rarely has a chance to see.
[Note: they use "tsundere" to describe Ryo's character here, which is often used to describe a wife who is cool and distant at first, but loving and devoted later.]

Pi: During this tour, we threw a birthday party for Ryo-chan and Tegoshi. At that time, Ryo’s gentle part definitely shined through.
Massu: We kept the party a secret. According to what I later heard from the staff, when Nishikido-kun was called he was apparently pretty irritated, saying “Why didn’t they wait.” But when the door opened and he understood that it was a birthday party, his expression changed completely and he was like, “Eh, why? Uwah~, really!?” and he broke into a wide grin.
Koyama: That’s this thing called “gap moe”. *laughs*
[Note: Sorry, I couldn't think of a word in English to express that! "Gap" refers to the gap between Ryo's cool and aloof attitude and his gentle and caring attitude, "moe" refers to that gap being endearing / charming. It's the kind of feeling you get when someone thrusts a bag of cookies into your hand and grumbles, "It's not like I made these for you, they're just leftovers, so there."]
Koyama: Also, these days he often teases Shige. Jokingly he suddenly snarls, “Oi, Shige!” But in the end, they get along well. I think as for what kind of hobbies they like, there is a part where they are on the same wavelength.
Pi: Also, Ryo-chan sometimes cuts right into Massu’s comment during an MC. *laughs*
Koyama: He does that. Saying, “That’s so not funny, don’t ever say that again.” *laughs* But when he does that to me, I’m absolutely finished, he’s pretty often saved me like that. *laughs*
Massu: But by now I’m pretty much used to that cool attitude of his. *laughs*

NEWS - Out of a newspaper
With a mix of illustrations and the NEWS members, we anticipated the coming spring this month. Some people go to the park, some people stay at home… please feel how good it is to spend time in the warm rays of the sun!

Nishikido Ryo
I can hardly wait!

The other day I hooked up my guitar to the amp and when I let loose with a deafening sound, the fuses blew out. So I went into an electronics store and bought two glass tube fuses, 250 volt and 2 ampere, but they broke again. When I looked at them closely, I found that they were 0.2 ampere fuses. In the end I decided to buy them online, and they’ll be delivered today between 6 and 8 p.m., I can hardly wait. They cost 160 yen for five fuses, but post and package costs 500 yen… Somehow it feels as like a loss. *laughs*

Oh no!
Before I came here today, I cooked for myself at home. Savoy cabbage chaahan. Then just when I was finished eating, I was picked up and had to leave the house without doing the dishes. I didn’t even have time to soak them, I’m sure the rice grains are now drying and sticky. The taste was normal. Definitely nothing to write home about. *laughs*

I can do it if I just try!
I haven’t done anything to praise myself like this. *laughs* But I think I have to do something that I can stick to for a long time. To live life with all my strength… I wonder if I am doing that. That’s something I’ll definitely continue to work on.

I’m still not quite there yet
I just said living life with all my strength… basically everything but that. So I think while devoting myself to the days I’d like to keep alive the ambitions in my heart. …this is it, I guess. My habit of quickly being fed up with something and trying to bring a matter to conclusion with some flawless words. *laughs* It’s this! Even though I know I have to transfer money, somehow I don’t manage to go to the bank…! Eh, you can transfer money over the internet or with your mobile phone? Really? For me, that’s a mystery, I haven’t done that yet. This “keeping the deadline” is pretty difficult for me.

Ouch!!
The other day I made curry. I’d cooked it once before, but at that time I’d put all the ingredients into the food processor and they turned all pulpy. The potatoes had the consistency of paste. *laughs* So I made this one in retribution, but when I was cutting the vegetables into fine slices, I cut into my finger with the blade. That really hurt!

Lately…
Ever since the beginning of this year, I’ve been reading a lot of novels. I read at least one novel a month. I’ll do my best to continue with this habit.

The topic of the talk is “time”. Here are the thoughts about time of the members who are all very busy~.

Nishikido Ryo
Q: What kind of time do you consider wasted?

A: Sleeping time. If you didn’t have to sleep, you could use that time for something else. Also, time spent waiting during my job, I think that’s totally wasted. Doing your with full energy, then going home… wouldn’t anyone consider this happy? [1] Sometimes I’m told that I’m too hasty, but I on the other hand think, why don’t you hurry up more? In Eito more than half of the members are this type. Yasu usually does things in a relaxed way, but if you ask him to hurry up, he does it. But sometimes we get on the elevator and only Yasu is missing. Around the time when everyone starts getting annoyed, saying, “Why isn’t that guy coming!”, he comes along on his own. If you ask him the reason, he’ll say, “I cleaned up the dressing room.” Then everyone is like, “…ah, sorry.” *laughs*

Q: If one day had 30 hours, what would you do in the additional six hours?
A: Study! Learning about a variety of things, I like that. I downloaded an application for studying for my smartphone and look at it when I have some free time on my hands. The other day I downloaded the Daijirin dictionary, and I also got my hands on a software with which you can study the reading of difficult kanji. The thing I’m most interested in is linguistics after all. I’m thinking I’d like to become able to speak English. I’d love to go on an overseas trip, but I can’t do it on my own. I’m always relying on my friends. I’ll start with traveling on my own in Japan.

Q: When ○○ happened, I started doing ●●
A: I once slept for 25 hours. It wasn’t because I was sick or overworked, I just went to bed normally and when I woke up again, 25 hours had passed. *laughs* After getting up, I was very hungry, to the point that I was surprised at the thought, “Humans can feel hunger like that…” *laughs* But normally I sleep 15 hours or something like that. When I can’t sleep, I make do with two or three hours. I’m pretty flexible in this regard. *laughs* By the way, today I slept nine hours!

Q: A recent event where you thought it was worth the time spent?
A: When a photoshoot progresses quickly and in a good tempo and finishes up earlier than planned! A knack for making it end earlier? Putting on an annoyed air and making others think, “That guy, he wants to go home early”… which is totally a joke *laughs*, isn’t it rather not chitchatting at the table or lounging about? But Yokoyama-kun is one rank above me. I’m like, “I want to go home early.” while Yokoyama-kun is like, “I want to go home super-early.” *laughs*

Eito Q&A
Q: What’s the drink you’re most happy to have for breakfast?
Ryo: Milk

Scan credit Vendy@Hachi~Three

[1] He wrote “happy” in katakana, so I used his word even though it might sound a bit strange here.

It’s a bit embarrassing, but this time we want to say it…

Even if we fight, even we’re apart… I love you after all.
Dear.Mom
– Love letter from the heart

When the cherry blossoms are in bloom and it becomes spring, it’s the season of journeying. Precious family, and mom who always watches over you. Now that you’ve become an adult, you can say it, a “thank you” straight from the heart, is what Kanjani8 told us earnestly. Please accept their warm love letters overflowing with love!

Nishikido Ryo
“On special days I say ‘thank you’.”

Getting on the shinkansen to Tokyo in a kimono!
My mother is a very, very active person. She goes to Shikoku to eat udon, she travels overseas on her own. These days it seems as though she’s enjoying her hobbies, she’s going to a kimono dressing school [1]. My mother’s uniform recently is the kimono, so even when she came to Tokyo on the shinkansen she was wearing a kimono. *laughs* I said, “Why don’t you put on something more comfortable?”, but apparently she loves kimono so much that it’s okay.
She’s like that recently, but when I was a kid, she was really scary when she was angry with me. She often got mad at me when I didn’t clean up my room or do my homework. Sometimes she’d make me and my brothers sit in formal style on the floor. *laughs* [2] But my way of thinking and my character right now have developped thanks to what my mother taught me, so I’m very grateful.
When I was little, I asked her for advice on buying something I wanted, and she told me, “Think it over three times, and if it’s still something Ryo wants, it’s okay to buy it.” These words stuck with me, and now when I want to buy something expensive, I still think it over three times.

Number one in my mobile phone is my family
When I started doing this job, my mother didn’t comment on it at all. She wasn’t really against it, she still doesn’t comment on it. But when I come home, I find the “Last Friends” DVD lying around, so I think she does watch what I’m doing. But she doesn’t tell me her impressions or anything. That’s because my mother knows best that I’d get totally embarrassed if she were to do that.
These days I don’t meet my family that often, but sometimes when I’m alone at night I call them. Speaking of that, the number one group on my mobile phone is always my family. Also, the memory number starting with 000 is always our home in Ôsaka. I feel that I put them there on purpose so that I can reach them as fast as possible.
It’s not as if I’d contact my mother or my family frequently, we just talk on the phone now and then. It’s because I end up thinking once more that it’s embarrassing to talk on the phone and that it’s enough to just state the reason for the call. But on my mother’s or on my birthday or on mother’s day, I definitely call her. And I try to always tell her, “Thank you for everything.” It’s something hard to express in words, so you can really only say it on events like that. I’d like to keep with that and properly express my thanks to her on special days.

Dear mommy,[3]
Thank you for giving birth to me.
Thank you for giving me a great common name.
From Ryo

Recent condition - message to myself
I’m into strawberries
This is the season when strawberries taste great, so I’m eating a lot recently! To the point that I’m eating some every day. *laughs* There’s the “Toyonoka” variety that you can’t get in Ôsaka, but I’m also eating and comparing other varieties.

Scan credit Vendy@Hachi~Three

[1] In schools like these you learn how to properly wear and bind a kimono.
[2] Formal sitting style is called “seiza”, click here for a picture!
[3] While Ryo uses the neutral “okasan” in his article, he uses “kaachan” here, so I kept the childlike nuance by choosing “mommy” as translation.

Next is the introduction of simple recipes Ryo recommends for spring! We bring you Nishikido Ryo’s selfmade dishes and a talk about tasty food.

My mom taught me about cooking
These days I’m cooking for myself a lot. I especially like cooking dishes at home that I found tasty at a restaurant. Like pasta with mentaiko [1] and karashi [Japanese mustard] savoy cabbage or garlic rice, I ask the chef at the restaurant how he prepares it and then imitate him and cook it at home. It’s very tasty!
I think I always loved cooking. The first dish I cooked myself was chaahan! [2] My mom taught me how to cook it. It’s a secret technique of the Nishikido family, so I absolutely won’t tell you any more about it. *laughs* Mom also taught me the recipe with tomatoes and mozzarella cheese that I prepared today. You cut both tomatoes and the mozzarella in fine slices and stack them together, then you just garnish them with basil leaves and add salt and pepper. It’s quite simple, but when I ate it for the first time I was surprised how good it tastes! I didn’t know raw mozzarella cheese could taste this good, so that was quite the shock.

I’m happy about snacks in a basket!
Speaking of spring, when I was younger I was always looking forward to the snacks I got for day trips! I was happy when my mom made a kind of fruit punch with many fruits in it to take with me. I also like it when a girl prepares snacks for me. I think when we go on a date and she brings along a couple of sandwiches in a basket I’ll get really hyper! But I actually like fried sandwiches better than normal ones. So even though they’re a hassle to make, when she prepares fried sandwiches for me that will earn her a lot of points in my book. *laughs*

Column 1 - recent information: message about me
Excel is fun
I’m into collecting data in various excel files on my computer! Like results from training and such. I put them into the file and manage them.
Profile: Nishikido Ryou, born in Ôsaka on November 3 1984. Blood type 0.

Column 2 - I want to challenge this! My spring fashion
Wearing pink only
I’ll wear bright pink shoes together with a pale pink knit hat and pants in pale pink. *laughs* The point is to have different shades of pink!
